JAMES OUTCALT- Age 76, was found dead in his bed at his house in Basil, OH Saturday morning. He was the oldest of three brothers who died within the last two years. His brother Clark Outcalt, was found dead in bed at the Kern Hotel in April a year ago.

He is survived by two sons, Milton of Columbus, and Edwin of Basil, one daughter Miss Bertha and his wife (Mary) also survive. Mrs. Outcalt is very ill. The deceased was an uncle of Frank Outcalt and Mrs. Laura Caldwell of this area.

The funeral will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in Basil.

OUTCALT, JAMES, Lancaster. He is the oldest son of John and Mary A. (Clark) Outcalt. John Outcalt was born in New Jersey in 1812. He came with his parents to Ohio in 1820. They settled in Hocking township, where they lived for a number of years; thence removing to Liberty, and purchasing the farm now owned by Joseph Snider. In 1853 John Outcalt changed his place of residence, selecting for his home the farm. It is now owned and occupied by his son, and there his widow still resides. Mrs. Outcalt is a lady of sixty-five years, though appearing many years younger. She is a lady of fine culture, and held in the highest esteem by her many friends. John Outcalt died September 22, 1878. James secured a good education. During the winter months he taught school, and in the summer assisted at home. In 1858 he engaged in clerking in Morrow county. He remained here until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in the Seventeenth O. V. I. He was in active service three years, and participated in the battles of Stone River, Chickamauga, and Atlanta. He was also with Sherman on his famous march to the sea. When his term of enlistment had expired, he re-enlisted and took part in the grand review at Washington. At the close of the war he had attained the rank of First Lieutenant, and was also Acting Quartermaster a part of the time while in the service. He returned to civil life in July, 1865. Mr. Outcalt engaged in mercantile business in Crawford and Morrow counties until the spring of 1880. when he returned to Fairfield county. He was united in marriage in May, 1868, to Miss Mary J. Lyon, of Morrow county. Mr. and Mrs. Outcalt are the parents of three children-Bertha M., Edwin C. and J. Milton. The family are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Outcalt is also a member of the Masonic
order.

JAMES OUTCALT, Gilead Station; dealer in groceries, provisions, notions, queens and glass ware and confectionery; highest prices paid for country produce. Mr. Outcalt was born on his father's farm in Fairfield Co., Ohio, Dec. 22, 1838, and lived there eighteen years, attending school and working on the farm; he then taught school for one year, when he went to Chesterville, Ohio, and engaged as clerk in the general merchandise store of his uncle, J. G. Miles, until 1861 - in that year he enlisted in the 17th Ohio Infantry Regiment, and served with the command until 1864, he entering the service as a private and being mustered out as 1st Lieutenant; he participated in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Murfreesboro, Chickamagua, Atlanta Campaign., the March to the Sea, and the other battles of his regiment; on his return home he resumed his clerkship in his uncle's store, then conducted by Miles & Sperry, and continued with them until 1868; May 20 of that year he married Miss M. J. Lyon; she was born in Morrow Co., Ohio. He principally engaged in the grocery and provision trade in Mt. Gilead until 1873, when he removed to the village of Poplar, Crawford Co., Ohio, and engaged in the general merchandise business, which he carried on until the spring of 1880, when he came to Gilead Station and engaged in his present business. By his marriage there are two children - Bertha M. and Eddie C. His parents John and Mary A. (Clark) Outcalt, were natives of New Jersey; they married in Ohio, where they moved with their parents when young. He died in Fairfield Co. in the fall of 1878. Mrs. Outcalt lives in Lancaster, Ohio. They had a family of three children - James, Clarkson and Harrison all are married and have families; the two latter live in Lancaster, Ohio.
