JOSEPH HUGH SMITH, 74 year old retired St. Francis merchant, died of a heart attack at 7:30 a.m. last Friday at his home on East Walnut Street. Starting to walk downtown, he collapsed as he reached the sidewalk in front of his home and died about half an hour later. He had not been ill previously. A Marion County native, son of Joseph T. and Gillie Ball Smith, he operated a general store at St. Francis many years before retiring two years ago and moving to Lebanon. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna K. Smith; five daughters, Mrs. James B. Greenwell, Bardstown; Mrs J. Maurice Canary, Birmingham, Ala.; Mrs. Bernard Knopp, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Harold Browning and Miss Rebecca Smith, Labanon; a son, Theodore Smith, Louisville; two sisters, Mrs. W. P. Knott, St. Francis and Mrs. Regina Cambron, Loretto, a brother, Clint Smith of Florida, and 11 grandchildren. The body was at Bosley Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Monday when funeral services were conducted by Msgr. Joseph D. Gettelfinger at St. Augustine Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were W.C. McDuffee, Noel Osborne, Bernard Welson, Donald Ball, Walter Miles and W.B. Jones.
