Dr. Oliver, a distinguished zoologist and specialist in herpetology, is the only person to have held directorship of the New York Aquarium, Director Emeritus of the American Museum of Natural History, and the Zoological Society. During World War II, Dr. Oliver took leave of absence from the American Museum of Natural History to serve in the United States Navy. His field work included expeditions to Mexico and the Bahamas and collecting in countries and islands of the Mediterranean, and in Africa, Cuba, Trinidad, Panama, the Marshall Islands, Okinawa, and Japan. He married Elizabeth Jane Kimball May 3, 1941 in Saginaw, Michigan. They had 2 children. He later married Ruth Norton.
