Besides farming, Austin was working as a sawyer in Polly's family sawmill.
They had Edmond born in December of 1859. By the time Polly applied for a widows pension, he had already passed.
They also had a daughter Adelia G. born on 4 Sep 1862
Austin enlisted in Battery "C", 1st Michigan Light Artillery on 4 Jan 1864, mustered at Jackson, MI 14 Jan 1864, Polly was with child at the time.
On 23 Jun 1864, Polly gave birth to Austin Adelbert Hayward at Leslie, MI.
Austin died of disease on 8 Jul 1864 at the Army Field Hospital at Rome, GA, 65 mi. nw of Atlanta. Just prior to his passing the battery had been involved in conflicts at Acworth & Kennesaw Mt. GA.
I've often wondered if Austin received the news of his son's birth before he passed.
Polly initially applied for a Widows Pension on 8 Oct 1864 which was granted, starting $8- per month to July of 1864.
Have a copy of a letter written by Polly in 1866 to Austin's aunt Adelia Goldy. Adelia was both aunt & step-sister to Austin's mother, Hannah Treat. Besides asking about family members, Polly lamented the passing of her "kind kind husband'>
In or before 1875, Austin's family removed to Groveland, McPherson Co. Kansas. Polly & her daughter remained there the rest of their lives, the son Austin raised a family outside of Harrison, Franklin Co. KS.
