Frederick served with the Union forces during the Civil War in Company D, 46th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted for a period of three years and was mustered in as a Private on September 2, 1861. He was later promoted to Corporal. He died due to injuries sustained during the Battle of Peachtree Creek.
Frederick was the first of three children born to Peter Sorber and his first wife, Elizabeth Rustay. He never married.
