MARK WILLIS

Representative from the secong district of Sanilac County, was born in Sonerset, England, in 1832, where his early education was obtained. In 1846 he emigrated to Canda, where he remained nine years, coming to Lexington, Sanilac County in 1855. He became throughly imbued with the spritit of patriotism and liberty, which was when agitating the country, and has always been a strong republican, advocating the principles of his party in many localities, through a dozen campaigns. Mr. Willis is married and has been a successful farmer forty years of his life, ten of which he has also engaged in the lumber business. He has held the office of highway connissioner, and was school inspector then years. He was elected to the legislature of 1901-1902 by a vote of 1,810 to 1,091 for Fred Viets democratic candidate.

"The funeral of the Hon. Mark Willis, who represented this county in the state legislature during the sessions of 1901-03, was held at the Ridge church Saturday afternoon of last week and was one of the largest ever held in Sanilac township. Mr. Willis was born in Somersetshire, England, in 1832, and came to this country when he was but 13 years of age. He came to Lexington in 1852 and engaged in the sawmill business. In 1866 he purchased the farm in Sanilac township where he has ever since resided. Mr. Willis was the father of seven children, five of whom, with his widow, survive him. Had he lived until November, he would have been married 50 years."
