From the History of Macomb County, Michigan, pg. 876:

"GEORGE WHITING, son of Peter and Margaret Champion Whiting was born August 19, 1833, in the Gratiot Light House, St. Clair County, Michigan. His father was born in Schoharie County, New York, January 1, 1791, and moved to St. Clair County in 1818 where he followed the occupation of a millwright. He died March 29, 1880. Mr. Whiting's mother still lives with her son as of 1884.
In 1861 an excitement regarding the supposed discovery of petroleum broke out in the neighborhood where Mr. Whiting was living and he sold his farm for a considerable amount and removed to Macomb County September 5 of that year. There he purchased a farm on the North Branch of the Clinton River known as the James Thompson farm, where he now resides. He was married to Jane Elliott, daughter of Nathan B. Elliott of St. Clair County September 18, 1859. They have had ten children: Mary born February 24, 1861, married Zachary Payne, lives in Ray Township; George C. was born January 19, 1863 and died February 14, 1863; Emma E. born April 22, 1864; Elmer U. born June 1, 1866; Lillie A. born June 11, 1868; Eddie E. born June 19, 1870; Ruby born February 22, 1875; Hugh C. born June 18, 1877; Neil born March 20, 1879; Jennie born October 5, 1881. Eight children are living at home. Mr Whiting has always been a Republican and has held various positions of trust in his township. Both he and wife are members of the Christian Church."
