Thomas G McDonald is considered by many to be one of the preeminent pioneers of the Steel industry in Youngstown, OH. For more than 21 years, Mr. McDonald was the General Superintendent of the Youngstown District, Carnegie Steel. In recognition of his contributions to the industry the city and steel mill at McDonald, Ohio were named after him.

He was co-founder with his brother Joseph A McDonald of the minor leage baseball team the "Youngstown Iron Works" which won the premier championship of the Ohio-Pennsylvania league in 1905.

As it was noted in the conclusion of the Resolution drafted at the founding of McDonald, OH: "...the Village of McDonald shall stand as a noble monument to his life, and as a monument which the Village Officials will always keep in a town safe, beautiful and sanitary, so that the memory of MR MCDONALD may be thus enshrined by the people in their hearts forever."
