While in Youngstown, Joseph McDonald was co-founder with his brother Thomas G. McDonald of the minor leage baseball team the "Youngstown Iron Works" which won the premier championship of the Ohio-Pennsylvania league in 1905.
In his eluogy presented by the Reverand Doctor W. E. Hammaker (Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, Youngstown, OH), Joseph A McDonald was described thusly:
"...a great industrialist, a civic reformer, and a true philosopher".(1)
