Alexander "Sandy" Ritchie was born in Scotland to Robert and Mary Ritchie. They came to the United States in the late 1860s, settling in western Maryland. A miner by profession, Sandy came to Aspen, Colorado in 1887 to work in the silver mines. He was killed in 1894, working in the Leadville mine in Lenado, Colorado.
