Rex H. Canfield, age 85, of Youngstown Road, Youngstown, NY, died Tuesday, November 27, 2001 in the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Lewiston after a two-week illness.
Mr. Canfield was born January 6, 1916 in the Town of Porter, the son of David and Kittie (Clapsattle) Canfield and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Canfield married Jane Rose June 17, 1944. He attended local schools and graduated from the University of the State of New York, a two-year training program in agriculture in Wilson, NY in1949. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, enlisting in 1942, seeing action in the South Pacific and later in occupied Japan. He was Honorably Discharged · with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. He continued serving his country as a member of the Marine Corp Reserve until 1952. ·
Mr. Canfield was employed by Bell Aircraft, Kimberly Clark, and Wendt's Dairy, all in Niagara Falls. In 196 he began working for the Niagara Frontier State Parks Commission, retiring in 1979 as Superintendent of Four Mile Creek State Campsite. Following his retirement, he maintained his 10-acre farm, growing peaches, apricots, tomatoes and corn. During the winter months, he refinished and caned furniture and was well known for his fine craftsmanship. Mr. Canfield was a member of Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313, and the Marine Corp League in Lockport.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his ' daughters, Mary (Charles) Canterbury of Attica and Anne (Donald) Winter of Ransomville; a brother, Clarence (Patricia) Canfield of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Scott (Maureen) Canterbury, David Canterbury, Eric Winter and Laura Winter; and a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Canterbury; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and D. Kenneth Canfield.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Hardison Funeral Home, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville. The Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313 will hold services for their fallen brother at 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 30, at 12:00 Noon at the Funeral Home, with the Reverend Dr. Charles Lamb officiating. Burial will be private in the Oakland Rural Cemetery, Youngstown. Contributions may be made to charity of one's choice.
