James Thomas Leach, Jr. was born 1839 in the Cleveland Township area of Johnston County, NC, the 3rd of 10 known surviving children (4 boys/6 girls) born to wealthy physician and planter, Dr. James Thomas Leach and his wife, Elizabeth Willis Sanders.

He was the paternal grandson of John Thomas Leach II and Susanna Parham; and gr-grandson of Dr. John Thomas Leach I and Elizabeth Winnants, all of Johnston County. His great grandfather was the first of the Leach family to settle in Johnston County, having come from Mecklenburg Co, VA, and establishing his plantation "Leachburg". On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of wealthy planter Col. John Sanders II and his (2nd) wife, Mary Willis Boddie of "Sanders Grove" plantation in Smithfield.

On December 22, 1859, 20-year old James married 18-year old Lenora Jane McCullers. James and Lenora settled in Panther Branch, Wake County, where they farmed and became parents to 2 known daughters:

* Inez Neglina Leach HOLLAND(1862-1936)
* Alma Lenora Leach McCULLERS (1860-1953)

Within a year of the birth of their last child, Lenora passed in 1863 at age 23.

The young 24-year old widower then married about 1868 to 18-year old Sarah Rebecca Holland of Cleveland Township. This union resulted in 5 more children being born (2 boys/3 girls):

* John Leach (ca. 1869)
* Carl P. Leach (1872-1907)
* Celestia Estelle Leach McCLAMMY (1875-1955)
* Nannie Elizabeth Leach (1878-1952)
* Floy James Leach (1881-1957)

John died in 1912 at age 72. His wife of 44 years survived him 13 years, passing in 1925 at age 75.
