He enjoyed a full colorful life beginning in Tuckahoe, N.Y., on January 9, 1925. He was raised in Butler, N.J. In 1943, he entered the Marine Corps during World War II, where he participated in three battles in the South Pacific achieving the rank of corporal with an Honorable discharge in 1946. He later moved to Jacksonville Beach and finally to St. Augustine in 1961. He worked for Fairchild for several years as a machinist and then opened Associated Oil and Appliance Center, later changing the name to DeBow's Appliance Service, which is now owned and operated by his son, Darryl. Everyone he met was an instant friend and could not forget the colorful man he was. He loved telling stories and jokes, dancing, playing cards and enjoying people. He was highly respected and well known in the community as being honest, fair and sociable. He was a well loved man who will truly be missed by all. His final resting place will be St. Augustine Memorial Park, located on Old Moultrie Road.
He is survived by his former wife and long time friend Margaret DeBow, his six children and their spouses; his son Darryl and Joann DeBow, his daughters, Carolyn and J.R. Pearce, Dolores and Cameron Young, Goldie and Shawn Douglas, all of St. Augustine; Jo Ann Winters of New Port Richey; Jane Hammock, North Carolina, 16 grandchildren: Sabrina Moser, Scott DeBow, Sara Leclaire, Josh, Marissa and Mariah Tompkins, Heather McHone, Donnie and Ryan Pearce, Kayla and Jacob Young,
Jasmine and Theodore Douglas, Jarred and Tim Johnson, David Bew and eight great-grandchildren.
Flowers are gratefully declined; those wishing may make a contribution in his memory to Hospice of the Lakes St. Johns Ave. Palatka.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 18, 2004, at Craig Funeral Home Chapel, retired Pastor Warren Frederick, officiating at the services.
