Mercy Starr Hoyt was the first wife of Eli Hoyt and shares a gravestone with him. It is now crumbling and, I am told, unreadable, but I haven't looked myself. The gravestones in this cemetery were transcribed in 1878 by C. Durkee.

Mercy was the daughter of Samuel and Lois Starr of Bethel, Fairfield Co CT. The Hoyts were from nearby Danbury, CT. There is a birth record in 1789. She is sometimes said to have been Mary rather than Mercy but she had a sister Mary born in 1801 so that seems unlikely. Durkee read her name as Mercy. Her elder sister Rachel married James Taylor Hoyt, Eli's brother.

I have not seen either a marriage record or a death record for her. The 1810 death date seems to have been based on the notation on the gravestone, recorded by Durkee in 1878, that she died at age 20. Is this correct? Could it have been read wrong? Assumedly working from the same gravestone, Durkee got Eli Hoyt's dates wrong. He listed 1786-1818. There is a birth record for Eli showing that he was born in 1781 and he died in late 1813. There is a probate record citing his second wife Hannah Camp in February 1814. Could the the age 20 have been read wrong too? We know Eli remarried by c. 1813 at the latest since there was a child Albien who died as an infant in February 1814. Could Mercy have lived to 1812, perhaps dying when a child was born?

I also wonder if her in-laws could have gotten it wrong and thought she had been "about 20"?

As a working hypothesis, I speculate that Eli and Mercy might have had a son Starr Taylor Hoyt born in 1812 in CT. While we know Eli certainly died in Saratoga Co NY, we do not know that Mercy did although one would assume she did since she is on the gravestone there. However, that seems to have been placed after his death since he was on top. We know that both were born in Fairfield Co CT, but do not know where they married. Brother James Taylor Hoyt and sister Rachel Starr married in CT in 1799. The Hoyts were still in CT in 1800. They seem to have arrived in NY by c. 1806 based on birth of child there. However, Mercy would have been too young to have married until late in her short life; likely she would have married nearer 1810 in CT.

James Hoyt, Eli's father, moved to NY after the 1800 Census in which he and his son James T. Hoyt are found on the same page as Mercy's father Samuel Starr in Danbury. Also on the same page was brother Abel Hoyt and their father Samuel Hoyt as well as various Starrs and Taylors. James Hoyt is in the 1810 Census in NY next to his brother Abel 1760-aft 1830. James T. is there too, indexed as "Hayt". There are two married Eli Hoyts in Danbury, CT in the 1810 Census in the right age range to have been him, one seemed to have been Eli Hoyt 1782-1825. Who was the other?

So the questions are, when exactly did Mercy Hoyt die, where did she die, and did she and Eli have a son Starr Taylor Hoyt born in 1812 in CT? Anyone have any ideas about this? I realize I could be wrong.

It is worth noting that in February 1814 second wife Hannah Hoyt was awarded one-third of Eli's property. Her son seems to have died just weeks before, so one wonders who got the other two-thirds. A son from the first marriage?

NB: There were at least four other Starr Hoyts of this generation. Three of the others have been placed in their extended families, including one who was a son of James Taylor Hoyt. The fourth has only shown up in a newspaper article re his accidental death in 1862. How Starr Hoyt 1812-1885 of Baltimore fits into the greater Hoyt family is unknown.

Starr Taylor Hoyt 1812-1885 was in Columbia, PA by c.1833 at the latest and moved to Baltimore in 1851. No idea when, how, and why he turned in in PA. Perhaps if he were an orphan raised by extended family he would have had a reason to leave as soon as he could.
