Civil War Veteran

Beller, Elijah, age 34, resident of Benton Co., native of OH, enlisted Dec. 25, 1863, mustered out July 31, 1865, Savannah, GA.
-------------------------------------------------------Elijah enlisted in the Civil War on 12/25/1863 at Vinton, Iowa. He was a private in the 28th Regiment, Iowa Voluntary Infantry. He was wounded at Red River, LA on 5/5/1864. He was discharged on July 31, 1865. He received a pension of $17.00 per month, as he was disabled after his return from the war. Besides the hip injury from his wound, he had chronic diarrhea and other ailments. According to affidavits given by John Armstrong, Elijah spent much time in bed and could not work. After his death his widow received $12.00 per month pension and there were several children under the age of 16 left at home at this time.
