BALES, NEDRA CURETON - age 94, passed away Tuesday evening, May 20, 2003, at Sweetwater Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Flournoy E. Bales son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bales of Morristown, TN . She was a co-worker of Newport's historic Nelson-Bales Drug Store. Nedra was one of five daughters born to Lora McNabb Cureton and Walter Craigmiles Cureton of pioneer Cocke County families. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Joe Sherlin of Sweetwater. She was preceded in death by sisters Elizabeth Cureton and Lagretta Parrott of Newport and Hazel Farmer of Maryville. Nedra was an honor graduate of the University of Tennessee, Class of 1930. She was a teacher at Parrottsville High School and a member of the Methodist Church of Newport where she was a teacher. She was an active member of Newport's oldest women's civic organization, The Twentieth Century Club, and served as its President. Her "children" were her seven nieces and nephews who dearly loved their spirited, delightful "Aunt Ned". They are : Bob Parrott of Knoxville, Elizabeth Farmer England of Alcoa, John Craigmiles Farmer of Murfreesboro, Janey Richesin and Judy Shope of Sweetwater, Walter Sherlin of Raleigh, N.C., and Joe Sherlin, Jr. of Johnson City. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Manes Funeral Home in Newport. The funeral will follow the visitation with Rev. Freddreck Long officiating. The interment service will be held at Union Cemetery, Newport. The family would like to thank the staff of Sweetwater Nursing Center for their kindness and loving care. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Newport, The Holston Home for Children, Greeneville, or the charity of one's choice.
