Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hawkins. He was educated in the Bloomington, IN city schools and had been employed at both NAD Crane and Camp Atterbury before his induction in the Army on December 12, 1942. He was sent overseas in 1944. Before going into Germany with General Patton's army, he had seen service in France, Belgium, and Holland. He was serving with Company A, 301st Infantry, 94th Division when he was killed January 20,1945 in Germany.

He was married to Laura Kathryn Flynn Hawkins.
