He then enlisted in Company C, 44th Ohio Infantry and was promoted to Full Corporal, trasferring to Company C, 8th Ohio Cavalary three years later. He served a total of 4 years and 3 months from April 1861 to July 1865, mustering out at Clarksburg, West Virginia.
He married Caroline Rathbun aboout 1866. In 1870 they were living in Tennessee with son, Charles and a 1 month old daughter, Ella. By 1880 the family had moved to Grand Rapids,Kent Co, Michigan with Charles, Ella, Ulysses and Cora. William was born a year later in July 1881.
Caroline died in November 1890 at the age of 45 years and 9 months. Two and a half years later, burial services were held for David Valentine on May 9, 1893 at Fairplains Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
