A.D. Bowen passed away peacefully July 14, 2009, after a long illness at the age of 74.
Born Oct. 14, 1934, in Holly Springs, Miss., he was the oldest of nine children born to Rannie and Hollie Bowen.
As a child he moved to Chicago and later to Evanston, Ill., attending Haven Junior High and Evanston Township High School class of 1951, where he played the trumpet in the school band, was a star on the track team and was an outstanding halfback on the football team. He was offered a full scholarship to Northwestern University.

During his military career he was stationed at several Air Force bases including Lackland, Shepard and Biggs in Texas, Walker in New Mexico, and Minot in North Dakota, and bases in Denver, Fairbanks, Alaska, Guam and Okinawa.
He and his family thoroughly enjoyed the years stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. He was also a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association.
He married his wife, Judy Parks, in Evanston in 1952.
Upon his retirement from the Air Force he worked for 20 years at Unocal Oil Refinery in Rodeo as a head unit operator, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed the friendships he established while at Unocal.
He was a loving husband, devoted father and generous grandfather who was lovingly known as "Papa" by his grandchildren.
