Novelist. Born at Holne in Devon, he was educated at King's College, London and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He took holy orders and became the vicar of St Mary's in Eversley in 1844, holding the living there for the rest of his life. He was professor of Modern History at Cambridge. His principal novels are 'Westward Ho!', 'The Water Babies' and 'Hereward the Wake'. He also published numerous sermons.
