Mathias was the eldest son of Rev. John and Mary Angel of Stokes County (formerly Surry County until it split in 1789).

He married Charity Gibson in Stokes County on 24 March 1801.

He fought in the War of 1812. Enlisted in the Army on 7 Oct 1812 in the Infantry Regiment under Col. J Wilburn.

He was survived by his second wife, Martha, and his 6 children: Delila, Catherine, Joshua, Minerva, Henry and John. And grandchildren.

His son Joshua helped take care of him in the last couple years of his life. He passed away sometime between 4 Aug 1860 and before 1870.
