Funeral services were conducted on Friday from the Philadelpha Congregational church in Ritzville for David Hoefel who died Tuesday. He had suffered a massive stroke Sunday afternoon. Rev. Ernest Sprenger officiated at the last rite. Mr. Hoefel was born Aug. 13, 1887 in Dennewitz, Russia, the son of Friedrich and Theresia Hoefel. He attended German and Russian school in Basyrjamka Russia before coming with his parents to the US. They homsteaded 12 miles south of Odessa in Dec. 1901. David Hoefel was married to Hannah Louise Morach on June 2, 1916 in Ritzville. Mrs. Hoefel survives her husband as do two children, Walter Hoefel of Washtucna and Marian (Hugh) Monore of San Mateo, CA. There are three grandchildren. He is also survived by six brothers and five sisters, including a brother, Robert Hoefel of Odessa. Mr. Hoefel worked at the Ritzville Trading Company and then joined his uncle, Chris Rieker, in partnership to sell Fords and Buicks. In 1917 the partnership was split with Rieker retaining Buick and Hoefel taking the Ford line to the Ritzville Garage and later Ritzville Motor Company. He sold the busines in 1946. The deceased was active in many civic affairs in Ritzville. An early pioneer of the area, he was mayor of Ritzvle from 1933-37 and Eighth district (Adams, Lincoln and Ferry)representative in the State Legislature from 1945-1953. He was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church and it Men's Fellowship. Pallbearers at the funeral were Paul and Harold Hoefel of Odessa, James Schoesler of Ritzville, Ted and Fred Hoefel of Spokane and Dr. Richard Olesberg, Coeur d'Alene ID.
