Her husband, Roy Dumas, 58, was a self-employed tax examiner and notary public. He was a hero of WW2 having received a Bronze Star in the Pacific. He was seriously wounded in battle and part of his stomach was removed, depriving him later in life of his strength (he would weigh scarcely more than 100 lbs). He undoubtedly had PTSD from that experience, at a relatively young age.
Despite this, he found love with Bernalyn "Bee" Kelly and the two were married. They had a sole child - a son Michael Eugene Dumas, Sr - whom they both loved very much. Friends of the couple described them as "quiet and respectable" and "two of the finest people that God ever put on this earth."
Roy and Bernalyn Dumas became mass murderer George Howard Putt's first victims on the
afternoon of August 14, 1969. Roy survived hell on earth in the Pacific, only to have his life cut short brutally by a murderer. Five days after their deaths, Roy and Bernalyn Dumas were buried in Memphis' National Cemetery. Roy's Bronze Star, a presidential citation, and other war honors were displayed beside his casket.
Their memory lives on in the 2 grandchildren - Michael Dumas Jr and Mark Dumas - they never got to know, and their 5 great grand-children, for which they are grateful and proud to be descendants of such wonderful people.
