He produced the optics and micrometres for the Transit Circle that defines zero longitude at Greenwich, and three other major telescopes, all of which survive intact He was a colleague of the eminent Astronomer Royal, George Airy and was elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1831 and the Royal Society in 1852.
