He Married Frances Fitzwilliam, daughter of Capt. James William Fitzwilliam and Nancy Cartwright. She preceded him in death in 1905.
Father of Francis "Frank" McPhaul, John Joseph "Joe" McPhaul, Sr. (My Grandfather) Julius Andre "Jule" McPhaul, Alexander "Alec" McPhaul, Thomas Fitzwilliam "Tom" McPhaul and Henry Brooks McPhaul
John McPhaul was born near Quincy, Florida. Sometime around 1869, his family moved to Bastrop County, Texas. He attended school in Bastrop and Sam Houston Narmal School at Huntsville. He taught school, later read and practiced law in the office of Joseph D. Sayers, who later became the Governor of Texas. (Find A Grave Memorial# 19690) With Joe Sayers nomination, he secured appointment as a law clerk in the General Land Office, Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C., where he remained until his death in 1933. For years he was a member of the Land Office Board of Law Review, Later serving as head of the Board, or Chief Law Clerk, as the position was known. He was accredited to argue before the Supreme Court of the U.S., but I have no record whether he did.
Soon after accepting appointment in Washington, he returned to Bastrop and married Frances Fitzwilliam on 6 Feb 1894.
