Loper, William
05 June 1858 - 17 June 1944
Eccentric Who Wore Hair In Knot, Dies in Hospital.
William Loper, a familiar and unusual figure about the streets of Newark for many years, died today at 9:20 a.m. in City hospital. He had been ill in his home 891 Garfield Avenue, and was moved to the hospital Thursday. Since then his condition had been regarded as critical.
He was "unusual" as he strolled about the town because of his hair which was long and rolled into a knot at the back of his head. While various reasons had been given for wearing his hair in that manner, since he was a young man, he never told the real reason.
Instead he was always amused over the questions and occasionally his answer would be –"I could give you two or three reasons. One might be that I have been doing this because of an election bet – and it might be because of some religious beliefs, and then again it might be because I was disappointed in love. You can choose your own reason."
His brother, Nathan Loper who died Aug. 2, 1942 at the age of 85 years, hinted to friends at one time that the peculiar hair dress of his brother was continued years ago when he learned that his untrimmed hair relieved severe headaches and eye trouble.
He was the son of Martin and Susan (Bounds) Loper of Mary Ann Township and the last of a family of five children. Two brothers and two sisters are deceased. A sister, Mrs. Phoebe Westbrook died Aug. 29, 1943 in her home in the Dayton Road. Charles Westbrook of east of Newark is a nephew of the deceased.
For a number of years William Loper and his brother Nathan lived on a farm near Mary Ann Furnace and in 1931 the home was destroyed by fire. The men lost a sum of money in currency which had been hidden back of the woodwork. Part of the money was redeemed from what was found in the ashes and sent to Washington D.C.
The body is at the Gutliph & Henderson funeral home and funeral services will be held there Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Rev. W.H. Long will officiate and burial will be made in Barnes Cemetery.
