GRANDPARENTS:
Hon. George Dent
was born Abt. 1755 in Whitehaven ( Charles Co.), Maryland, and died 1812 in Blandensburg ( Alleghany Co), Maryland.
He married Susannah Dawson Cromwell April 28, 1785 in Evangelical Lutheran Church (Frederick Co.). She was born WFT Est. 1745-1768 in (Prince George Co.), Maryland, and died WFT Est. 1790-1856.
Notes for Hon. George Dent:
"On April 28, 1785, George Dent married Susannah Dawson Cromwell, widow of Joseph Cromwell, then settled in Cumberland, Maryland." (Reference Harry Wright Newman, The Maryland Dents , Richmond, 1963, p. 70) This information contradicts many details given by Julia Grant of her family background. A privately printed genealogy, based partly on family tradition, states that George Dent "married Susan Dawson, and afterwards a Marbury (Cromwell)." (Gustave Anjou, The Dent Family, (n.p., n.d. (ca. 1906, p.26.) Perhaps the Dents had ties to the prominent Marbury family of Maryland, since Fredrick Dent named his youngest daughter Emily Marbury. At any rate, George Dent went to Cumberland County, Maryland, was the official surveyor in 1806, and lived in a log house, called the Dent's House.

William Bernard Dent, born December 20, 1861 in St. Louis, Mo
John Dent traced his ancestry to Thomas Dent, who had come from Yorkshire, England, in the middle of the seventeenth century and had settled in Maryland, where he bred sons who held public office and prospered in the new land.
His father had made enough money in fur trading by the time he was twenty to buy the tract of land that he later developed into the White Haven property. So named it after an ancestral Dent home.
Brother in Law to President Ulysses S. Grant
John C. Dent, who spent his final days in Carthage, Missouri and had a very close relationship with U. S. Grant, beginning in the days when Grant was a green lieutenant fresh from West Point stationed at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis. In fact he probably offered occasional words of advice of an almost fatherly nature. John Dent was born in 1816 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania while Grant was born April 27, 1822.
John was the first of the eight children born to Colonel and Mrs. Frederick Dent. The remaining members of the family, all born at St. Louis, were George, Fred, Louis, Julia, Ellen (Nellie), Mary and Emily (Emma).
Julia Dent became Mrs. U. S. Grant, Emma Dent and Ann Amanda Shurlds, who would become John Dent's second wife, were girlhood chums. A further close family tie is found in the fact that George Dent married Mary Isabella Shurlds, Ann's older sister.
