Elwood was born in LeRoy township on the Hanneman/Arke farm where he grew up. He attended Crow rural school and graduated from high school in Madison. He married Lenore Helene Olson at Wentworth, SD, on July 9, 1933. They farmed in LeRoy township until moving to California about 1937. At the time of his death he was employed as a warehouseman for the Vonsen Company at Petaluma. He was a member of the Teamsters and Warehouseman's Union, Local No. 624. He was the secretary of the board for St. John's Lutheran Church and had previously been president and treasurer.
Elwood and Lenore had two sons, Kenneth Dale and Douglas Del, and one daughter, still living.
Elwood had been ill since the previous September when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church. Among those attending the funeral was his sister, Mildred Arke Price of Beresford, SD.
