CIVIL WAR VETERAN. SERVED WITH CO G 57TH PA INFANTRY OCT 1862 TO JUNE 1865.

The son of Cornelius & Eve (Koch) Lehmer, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Carroll Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg October 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service there October 8 as a p0rivate with Co. G, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry. Shot in the right arm at the battle of Chancellorsville, he returned to duty and promoted to corporal to date October 17, 1864. On January 13, 1865, he transferred to Co. G, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

In 1868-69, he apprenticed as a carpenter while living in Michigan. He married Mary Elizabeth Klugh, daughter of John Klugh (209th Pa Inf), and fathered Ralph Freeman (b. 09/20/72), Walter Scott (b. 07/04/74), Viola B. (b. 09/09/76), Hattie Klugh (b. 1878), Georgia E. (b. 11/06/80), Maurice (b. 1883), Pierce M. (b. 07/24/85), Flora (b. 1888), and Ruth H. (b. 1891). Returning to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, he became a member of Mechanicsburg's Zinn Post, No. 415, G.A.R., and in 1890 lived in Franklin Township, York County. Cause of death is listed as "chronic interstitial nephritis" and "over eating all his life." The year 1844 is also reported as year of birth.
