Like his father before him John was a butcher by trade at first. By the 1860's he was a gasmaker, and from 1878, at least, to 1900, he was a Philadelphia Policeman, assigned to the water works in 1890. He looks to have retired in 1900 and moved his family to Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He lived on Eden Road there when he died in 1911.
