Michael was born in Bavaria. His first wife was Catherine Obenour who was born in Pennsylvania; they were married in about 1860 and in 1870 were living in Huston township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Five children can be identified for them: Mary Elizabeth, John (lived in Nebraska), Amanda, William, and Theobald (Dewalt) Sylvester (died in Los Angeles in 1952).

Michael married his second wife, Melinda Fetterman, in about 1877. (Melinda's name is also shown as Balinda or Rosalin in censuses). They moved to Nebraska in about 1878. Eight children can be identified for them: Annie Clara, Isadore, Florence, Charley Ernest, Jessie Wilhelmina (Minnie), Mary Edith (married to Elton Bentley and lived in Idaho), Thomas Ellsworth and Frank.

Melinda seems to have died in about 1890 but I am unable to determine her burial place, or find a source for her death date.
