Several years after her mother died, Rufus married again. His wife, much older than him, was Charlotte Myers. Their marriage did not last long. Charlotte granted Rufus a separation and gave him $1000 on the condition that she was allowed to keep Caroline with her. Caroline's sister, Emily, was sent to her mother's relatives in New York.
Later, when Rufus wanted a legal divorce so he could remarry again, Caroline's situation was again part of the negotiations. IN this case, he agreed that Caroline would be Charlotte's daughter and raised by her family. He never saw her again. I don't know if she ever re-connected with her sister, Emily, or her half-brother William again.
I don't know what Caroline's life or upbringing was like, but this situation seems quite odd to me. Perhaps Charlotte really adored Caroline, or perhaps there were other reasons to keep her there. Regardless, these decisions were made without her input and in a manner that seems to reduce her to a bargaining chip. Perhaps that is just my take on it - but I digress.
