CHARLIE MATHIS SR., 97, of Prichard, W.Va., formerly of Wayne, W.Va., moved from this earthly life to his heavenly home to be with Jesus our Lord Saturday, June 2, 2007 at the Huntington VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, by Elders James W. Lambert, Charles O. Adkins, Tommy Damron and Raymond Watts. Burial will follow at the Taylor Wallace Cemetery, Mathis Ridge, Dunlow, W.Va. He was born August 26, 1909 on Mathis Ridge, a son of the late John H. and Thena Finley Mathis. Charlie was a retired construction worker and farmer and was one of the oldest living World War II veterans in Wayne County, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Prichard United Baptist Church. Attending church and fellowshipping with God's people was a great part of his life. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Hester Wallace Mathis; three brothers, Clyde, Claude and Clifford Mathis; a sister, Martha Mathis Browning; two infant children, Leonard and Arlie Mathis; a grandchild, Anthony Mathis; a great-grandchild, Christopher Mathis; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann Simpkins Mathis. Survivors include a daughter, Emma Osburn and husband Carl of Lavalette, W.Va.; three sons, Taylor Mathis and wife Joyce of Prichard, with whom he made his home in later years, Wayne Mathis and wife Elizabeth of Wheelersburg, Ohio and Charley Mathis Jr. "Peanut" and wife Erma of Wayne; eight grandchildren, Gregory, Kimberly, Philip Wayne, Karen, Marsha, Mark, Cheryl and Anita; 15 great-grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy, Tiffany, Charley, Brittany, Taya, Jeremy, Travis, Nathan, Courtney, Darren, Lacrissa Jo, Erica, Courtney and Abbygail; a great-great-grandchild, Emily Catherine. The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the Home Sweet Home Care Center and the Huntington VA Medical Center for their special care. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Morris Funeral Home. His grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.Husband Of:
