Samuel was born in Maine on March 24, 1839, and moved to Wisconsin before 1862, as he enlisted in the Union Army from Wisconsin. He was wounded in battle. After the war, he drifted west to Snohomish County where he was working in a logging camp in 1871. By 1878 when he married Catherine Matheson he was farming. They appear to have no children. Catherine died sometime before 1904 as Samuel moved to Everett, WA before that date and there is no sign of Catherine. Samuel fell ill and went back to Baldwin, Wisconsin to live with his sister Frances Bowen. At age 60 Samuel committed suicide. His probate took place in Snohomish County and his sisters and brother are listed as heirs. Catherine isn't mentioned.
