Tela's daughter Wilma would recount how wonderful her mom's cooking was. Tela never used a recipe. In desperation Wilma had Tela make a few of her favorites and would stop her mother and measure how much a handful or dash was in order to create a recipe to work from.

Tela's Missouri home had dirt floors and a tree stump in the middle which was used as a table. Wilma said that Tela moved from Marshfield, MO to Oxford, KS in a covered wagon when Tela was around 10 years old, joining an older brother who had already moved there. Wilma grew up with stories about how hard farming was back in Missouri. In Missouri you 'pick up a stone and put a seed under it, pick up a stone and put a seed under it.' Her family never looked back.
Wilma said they were poor but they did not know it. She remembered Tela cutting up Tela's mother's dresses for school clothes for Wilma and crying.
