She was the paternal grandchild of Gavin Hogg, born in Scotland, and his (1st) wife Mary Ann Bayard Johnson; and gr-grandchild of James Hogg & Mary Finlayson of Wick, Caithness, Scotland who immigrated to Wilmington, NC about 1757. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of John Stevens Bryan Sr. & Lucy Davis Haywood, a wealthy merchant and planter.
Lucy was 20 years old when she married 26-year old attorney, Isaac Foote Dortch of Goldsboro, on October 6, 1875. The couple would reside in Raleigh for the first 10 years of their marriage, then remove to Goldsboro.
Lucy & Isaac were parents to 8 known children (3 boys/6 girls), with their 4 eldest children being born in Raleigh: Sally Hogg Dortch (1876-1951), Gavin Hogg Dortch (1879-1943), Janette Hogg Dortch (1881), William Pittman Dortch (1884-1949), Ellen Sasser Dortch (1886-1981), Thomas Hogg Dortch (1889-1974), Lucy Bayard Haywood Dortch (1892-1947), Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hogg Dortch (1895-1985).
Lucy Hogg Dortch passed in 1905 at age 50. Her husband of 30 years then removed to Raleigh where he resided in the Hogg-Dortch family home on Wilmington Street with Lucy's older sister, Sallie Hogg. He died in 1910 at age 61. Her husband and 6 of her children are buried here in Oakwood, as are her grandchildren.
Of Lucy's sisters, her eldest sibling, Sallie Hogg, never married and died in Raleigh in 1918 at age 68. Middle sister, Janet Jannett Bryan Hogg (1852-1928) married stockbroker and President of the Raleigh Gas Light Company, Collin McKenzie Hawkins. They are all buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
