Sally Hogg was born 1850 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC the eldest of 3 known surviving children (all daughters) born to prominent physician and businessman, Dr. Thomas Devereaux Dortch and his wife, Janet Bryan.

She was the paternal grandchild of Gavin Hogg, born in Scotland, and his (1st) wife Mary Ann Bayard Johnson; and gr-grandchild of James Hogg & Mary Finlayson of Wick, Caithness, Scotland who immigrated to Wilmington, NC about 1757. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of John Stevens Bryan Sr. & Lucy Davis Haywood, a wealthy merchant and planter.

Sally was just 5 years old when her mother died in 1855. Her 32-year old widowed father never remarried and raised his daughters on his own, with Sally eventually taking the lead in mothering the younger children. She never married and remained in her father's household until his death in 1910. When her sister Lucy Hogg Dortch died in 1905, Sally also took over "mothering" Lucy's 8 children, particularly the two youngest; and continued the task when the children were orphaned with the death of their father in 1910.

Sally Hogg lived a long life in Raleigh, passing in 1918 at about age 68.
