Biography of Grace Stewart (1780-1870)
Grace Stewart was born about 1780 in Scotland to one of the Stewart families that settled in Johnstown, Montgomery (now Fulton) County, New York, after the Revolutionary War. She married a Stewart relative, John Robert Stewart, the son of Scottish immigrants Robert Stewart and Jane Wilson of Johnstown, about 1808. Her husband and his parents had immigrated in 1786 from Foss, Parish of Dull, Perthshire, Scotland.

John Robert and Grace had three children, who were recorded in the registers of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown. The three children were also mentioned in Grace's will, signed 20 Sep 1862. All three were also named in the 1837 probate papers of John Robert's father Robert Stewart.

- Robert John (born 1814, married Elizabeth Stewart)

A soldier during the War of 1812, her husband, John Robert, died of swamp fever on 15 Nov 1815 in Sackets Harbor, New York. Surviving her husband 55 years, Grace passed away on 14 July 1870, aged 90.

There are headstones for Grace, her husband John Robert, and her daughters Christy and Jane, who never married, in Johnstown Cemetery. Their son Robert J. Stewart, who married Elizabeth Stewart (same surname) and lived in Lenox, Madison County, was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneida, Madison County.
