Former Sheriff of Oneida Co. and Well Known Pioneer is Dead at Royalton

S.S. Kelly, one of the oldest citizens of this city passed away Tuesday night at Royalton where he had made his home for the past year.

Sylvanus Kelly moved to the city in the early nineties and lived here until a year ago when he and Mrs. Kelly moved to Royalton. Mr. Kelly was prominently identified in logging business with his brother George for many years. Their operations covered territory near Rhinelander. He was a man of strong character and of strict business integrity and was among the best known men in the northern part of the state. In 1901, he was elected to the office of sheriff of Oneida County, in which position he served with honesty and a high regard for duty and when he left at the close of his term, it was with a clean record. Four years ago he was laid low with locomotor ataxia and since that time had been confined to his bed. A patient and uncomplaining sufferer, he bore the pain bravely for four years and the end came as a relief to his sufferings.

Mrs. Kelly and three children, Edith of Minneapolis, George and Louis of Rhinelander, survive him.

The funeral was held at Royalton Thursday, Geo. Dunel of this city being sent by the Maccabees to represent them at the services.
