He died while visiting his son, Arthur, in Cuba and was cremated. His ashes were originally interred in Lakeview Cemetery in Ithaca. They were moved to the family plot in City Cemetery on 19 March 1945.

Cornell Geologist Dies in Havana

Had Been Emeritus Professor of University Since 1912, and Was Author of Many Books

Havana, Aug. 1 – Henry Shaler Williams, of Ithaca, N.Y., died here yesterday of pleurisy. He was 71 years old.
Professor Williams was well known as a geologist. His research work in Cuba resulted in the development of oil fields in the island.

Henry Shaler Williams was born in Ithaca in 1847. He was graduated from Yale College in 1868. He held the professorship of natural science in the University of Kentucky from 1871 to 1872 and was professor of geology in the same university from 1880 to 1892. He also held professorship at Cornell and Yale universities and has been emeritus professor of geology at Cornell since 1912. He was the author of numerous works on geology.
