James Ralph Vanderburg, 5th child of Jodie and Minnie was born June 1, 1919. He was named for his uncle, James, who died in 1890's.

In 1942 he married Jeanette R. Fair. Their six children: James Ralph Jr, Janice Rae, Joel Richard, Jeffery Randell, Jason Ronald, and Jory Robert Vanderburg. The joke they made "eight with initials of JRV was enough"!

Van and Jeannette were the couple that one turned to for a laugh. They were the consummate entertainers! When they entered a room with a smile, soon everyone there would be smiling with them.

His career was in the Air Force, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. He was able to take his family with him to live in several posts outside the United States.

At retirement, they made their permanent home in San Antonio, where they stayed busy in their beautiful yard. Growing flowers and travel became a hobby. Van died December 5, 2008; cremated and buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
