Assigned to the 10th Air Force, they were attacked by fifteen to twenty Japanese fighters. After several attacks, Walker's plane had suffered heavy damage and went out of control. It rolled over on it's back and and dived straight into the ground from 11,000 feet. Two of the other planes were shot down as well.
