New Cumberland, July 6. - Last evening about 8 o'clock Columbus Springer, a young man of seventeen was drowned in the Susquehanna about a mile below New Market. Young Springer lived with Mr. Deckman and had worked all day in the harvest field. In the evening he went up to Mr. Miller's farm and in company with some young men went bathing. He had only gone a short distance from the shore when his companions noticed he had disappeared. They ran for assistance, but when taken from the water life was extinct. It is supposed he had a cramp or a stroke, as the water was only a few feet deep where he drowned. The body was taken to the home of his uncle, Ed Springer, in the country.
