Sarah Malissa Jones was the daughter of Stephen Duncan Jones and Ann Cockfield. Her first husband was Steven Jordan Nettles (1836-1862), who died of disease in the Civil War. They had a daughter, Linnocent A Nettles (1858-1892), and a son, Stephen Dana Nettles (1859-1879) who were raised in the household of Samuel J Tomlinson (1817-1889). Linnocent later married Benjamine Bradham Tomlinson (1854-1901).
