William H. Deniston
William H. DENISTON, 68, a former Rochester City Court judge and former attorney for Fulton County, died at 10:38 a.m. Monday in South Bend Memorial Hospital, shortly after admission. A lifetime resident of this city, he resided at 315 W. Ninth St.
A practicing attorney in Rochester since 1938, Deniston was the only elected city judge in Rochester history. Until 1960, the mayor served as city judge here; when the position became an elected one, Deniston won the election on the Democratic ticket and was re-elected each four years thereafter until the position was abolished in 1978.
He was an unsuccessful candidate for Fulton Circuit Court judge in the 1978 elections, losing to present Judge Douglas MORTON.
Deniston was a past-president of the former Rochester Country Club, now the Rochester Elks Lodge, and won six golf championships there - in 1942, 1943, 1945, 1946, 1949 and 1960.
Born in Rochester April 14, 1913, he was the son of Arthur L. "Roy" and Ada L. RANNELLS DENISTON. He was married here May 25, 1940 to Mary F. McDOUGLE, who survives.
He was graduatd from Rochester High School in 1931, and was a graduate of Indiana University and the Indiana University Law School. He practiced law for one year in Indianapolis, then opened his practice of law in Rochester in 1938.
Deniston was Fulton County U.S. Savings Bond chairman in 1942-43, manager of the Fulton County License Branch from 1948-52, Rochester city attorney from 1956-57, and Fulton County attorney from 1977 to 1980.
He served 25 years, until 1966, as treasurer of the Rochester-Fulton County Library Board and also was chairman four years of the Fulton County Democratic Central Committee.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, the Eagles, Moose and Elks lodges of Rochester, the Fulton County Bar Association, and Kappa Sigma social fraternity. He also was a Realtor.
Surviving with the wife are a son, William Michael DENISTON, Rochester; a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Mary Ann) WAGONER, Franklin; two grandchildren, Cyle and Cory [WAGONER]; and a sister, Mrs. Parker (Barbara) STETSON, Lathrop Village, Mich. A daughter, Diane [DENISTON], preceded in death.
Private services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. David HEYWARD officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call today from 4 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Manitou Training Center.
The Fulton County Bar Association will conduct a memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Fulton Circuit Courtroom.
