Mount Union Businessman Expires at 84
J. Donald Appleby, 84, of 204 West Market Street, Mount Union, prominent Mount Union businessman, died Sunday, August 30, 1964, at 8:40 a.m. in the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born September 20, 1879 in Mount Union, he was a son of Thomas A. and Catherine (McNeal) Appleby. On January 15, 1916 he was married to Pearl Virginia Shearer at the Mount Union Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Chester W. Todd. A lifelong member of the Mount Unon Presbyterian Church, he served from 1928 to 1960 as an elder and for 25 years as clerk of the sessions. He was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School for a number of years. A graduate of Mount Union High School and Juniata College in Huntingdon, he worked for a brief period in Oregon before returning to Mount Union as cashier of the First National Bank. Following employment at the Pennsylvania Industrial School in Huntingdon, he entered the grocery business in Mount Union with his brother. Mr. Appleby was a 50-year member of the Mount Union Lodge of F. & A.M., a member of the Pennsylvania Historical Society and was a lifelon member of the Republican party. Surviviing are his wife of Mount Union; a son, CWO James D. Appleby of Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada; a granddaughter, Josephine Diane Appleby of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother, John C. Appleby of Mount Union and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Stratford of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. Carl Tiffany of Erie and Mrs. Nell Baldwin of Mount Union. Funeral services will be held from the Clark funeral home in Mount Union on Wednesday, September 2 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James W. Matz officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon on Tuesday and until the hour of the services the following day. Please omit flowers.
