Seth (Junior) St John, the son of Seth and Rebecca (Foster) St John, was born on the family farm near East Hubbardton, Vermont on November 21, 1801. His parents had taken over operation of the farm that his grandparents established in 1786 and possibly expanded it. Four children were born into the family: Guy, Samuel Wheeler, Allen and Sophia. Seth as an adult was active in local and state government, serving as a justice of the peace and later as a state representative from Hubbardton for twelve years, including 1837. Seth jr was the only child of Seth and Rebecca to remain in the Hubbardton area. His brothers Samuel Wheeler, Levi and Nehemiah all moved to Wisconsin in the 1830s and his sister Ruth, after she was married, moved to Parishville, New York. Seth jr passed away at the age of fifty-two on June 8, 1853 and is interred at the East Hubbardton Cemetery next to his wife and three of his children.
