Seth St John, the son of Nehemiah and Ruth (Wheeler) St John, was born on the family farm between Ridgefield and Redding in Fairfield County, Connecticut in 1769-70. He was baptized in the family church on 9 April 1769 at Redding. Little is known about Seth's youth, but it is known that he married Rebecca Foster in 1793. There is very little recorded about Seth. He lived with his parents on their family farm in Connecticut the first sixteen years of his life and it is most likely he completed his basic schooling there. The family moved to Hubbardton, Vermont around 1786 and his headstone records that he spent the next sixty year near this central Vermont farming community. Seth's five children were all born near East Hubbardton: Samuel Wheeler, Ruth, Levi, Seth and Nehemiah. It is likely that Seth took over operation of the farm that his father established in 1786 and possibly expanded it. Of his five children, only his son Seth Jr. stayed in Hubbardton after he married. His son Seth served as justice of the peace and later as state representative from Hubbardton for twelve years, including 1837. Seth and Rebecca's sons Samuel Wheeler, Levi and Nehemiah all moved to Wisconsin in the 1830's and their daughter Ruth, after she was married, moved to Parishville, New York. Seth, his wife Rebecca, his parents Nehemiah and Ruth, and his son Seth and his wife Sarah are all interred in the East Hubbardton Cemetery.
