Hubert A. Durant

BOMBAY - Hubert A. Durant, 77, of Bombay, NY , died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at CVPH in Plattsburgh, NY , after being stricken at his home.

Born in Bombay, October 6, 1931, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Kirkey Durant. He attended local schools.

He served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was Honorably Discharged.

On September 4, 1954, he was united in marriage to the former Marie Jean Savage at St. Mary's Church, in Fort Covington, by the late Rev. Edmund Dumas. She survives.

After the War, Hubert was employed on the St. Lawrence Seaway Project and also the construction of the General Motors Plant in Massena, NY . He later owned and operated a dairy farm in Bombay for thirty years.

He then retired to a hobby farm in his latter years. He also served as Bombay Town Justice for four years.

He was an avid horse rider and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Assc. He was the leader of the Bombay Shamrocks 4-H Club for over thirty years. He was very active in the local parades with his horses. His favorite place to go was his camp. He loved to spend time with his family, to spoil his grandchildren and great grandchildren and to make maple syrup. He also loved to dance and watch the PBR Rodeo. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, in Bombay.

Along with his wife, Jean, he is survived by one son, Peter Durant and his fiancee Lucie Crola of Albany, NY ., four daughters and two sons in law, Holly and Dave Brockway of Moira, NY , Roxanne DeCilles of Massena, NY , Lynne Bigness of Wilson, NC, and Darlene and Ernie Gonzalez of Bombay, one daughter in law, Darlene Durant of Malone, NY , one brother and sister in law, Donald and Jean Durant of Bombay, two sisters and one brother in law, Sr. Mary Stephen, OSM, of Massena, NY , and June and Clark Lashomb of Raymondville, NY , fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Mark Durant in April 2007, two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth Durant in infancy, seven brothers, Bernard, Ralph, Edward, James, Harold, Howard, and Lloyd Durant and five sisters, Marion and Mary Durant, Irene Sanborn, Odena Flynn, and Margaret Steen. Arrangements were with the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church in Bombay, with the Rev. Floyd J. Bleaux officiating.

Burial was in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Bombay Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
