Emily Clara was born 30 Jul 1848, the 8th of 10 children born to Aaron and Marie (Mariah Dean) Dicken. Aaron and Marie had moved to Illinois from Kentucky where the first three of their children were born. By the time Emily was 8, the family had moved to Bremer County, Iowa.

Emily married Wilbur Fisk Pillsbury July 8, 1873, in Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa. All of their children were born in Spirit Lake, IA.
